Confessions of a Children’s Librarian

April 9, 2008

I love the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.  Yes, it’s teen vampire romance with a few werewolves thrown in for excitement, but the dialog is well written and the plot zooms along so fast, you waste 2 hours without even trying.  I read the first book in 3 days, the second book in 4, and the 3rd book in 2.  And I have two kids under age 4.

It’s scary to admit loving something so trivial to one’s peers, but doesn’t everyone have at least one book or author they’re embarrassed to admit they like?  Don’t YOU?  (Ann W.)

Can I be embarrassed of a DVD? I’m currently watching The Love Boat, season one, on DVD and LOVING it. It brings my back to my childhood, when the best Saturday night ever was spent watching The Love Boat AND Fantasy Island. Ah, misspent youth!

Romance novels. I just have to read one or two a year and they have to be historical. Read Kathleen Woodiwiss’ last novel (Everlasting) just a few months ago. That set me good for , oh, I dunno, another four to five months?

I keep hiding my books from my family members, the teasing has gotten out of control. II would recommend Patricia Briggs’ “Mercy Thompson” series (Moon Called, Blood Bound and Iron Kissed) more heartily if the covers were a bit less tatto-ed and leather-ed.

If Carol can be embarrassed of a DVD, I’ll confess that my television guilty pleasure is Beauty and the Geek, but my supreme guilty pleasure is the romances and mysteries of Georgette Heyer (and I know I’m not alone!!!). I buy copies whenever I can find them and probably own about 30 titles. They are funny and charming period pieces!

Hah! DVDs of the Love Boat! Awsome. I watched the whole first season of the O.C. and it was cringe-worthy, so I guess I can’t really count it as a guilty pleasure, but how about Dawson’s Creek. When I was pregnant they were showing 2 hours of “Dawsons” back-to-back EVERY weekday morning before I had to go to work. I laughed, I cried, I didn’t tell anyone…
Bookswise, I’m always a little embarrassed when people catch me reading my beloved rock (auto)biographies like, “I’m with the Band,” or “The Dirt” (Motley Crue), or “No One Here Gets Out Alive” (the Doors), or “Hammer of the Gods” (Led Zep). But at the same time, reader’s advisory is all about appeal, so who cares, right?
Wouldn’t it be cool if comment could be tagged, too?

    Hmmmmm . . . guilty pleasures.

Okay, I admit it. I’m so shameless I read all the aforementioned and don’t even feel the least bit guilty. :)

I’ve heard arguments for and against, and my favorite theory is, “REAL radical feminists don’t eat their fellow prisoners.”

I’m a genre reader anyway, and lately I’ve been doing the vampire/werewolf/wizard thing. The Mercy Thompson series is a gem. Do try Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden series if that’s your bent. The audios are read by James Marsters, of Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Spike) fame, and he’s fantastic.

The first six Laurell Hamiltons were wonderful. Kim Harrison and Rachel Caine are great, but Kelley Armstrong was disappointing. Her heroines seem, how you say in English, kind of stupid.

“On The Prowl” is a fun short story collection — it led me to two new authors.

I’m enjoying listening to Dead Ex by Harley Jane Kozak. No zombies, despite the title. “Wollie” Shelley is an entertaining heroine.

I’m totally into the Twilight series right now. I love it!
