Have Yourself a Merry Little . . .
December 9, 2008
It’s the time of year to turn your attention to the holidays, and, of course, holiday movies. What’s your holiday viewing pleasure? What film is part of your holiday rituals?
I’ll start: My favorites are A Charlie Brown Christmas, if only for the excellent dance scene, and A Very Brady Christmas, that perennial classic.
Also, if you have never read it, Connie Willis has a wonderful short story in her Christmas collection Miracle and other Christmas Stories in which her characters debate the best holiday movie: It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. You may guess by the title which one comes out on top. (Hint: The book isn’t called “Wonderful” or “Life.”)

My kids love this stupid “Caillou” Christmas video about all the different holiday traditions, which is kinda cool, but I can’t stand Caillou’s super sweet, cute voice…it makes my teeth hurt. But it wouldn’t be Christmas without it!

I like the Natalie Wood Miracle on 34th Street for a movie and the Charlie Brown Christmas for tv special. I adore Statler Brothers for Christmas music. I have met very few Christmas treats I don’t like (fruitcake and a German thing come to mind as items to skip).
I’m spending most evenings reading Twas the Night Before Christmas and Room for a Little One… over and over again. Michael likes them.

The family favorite at my house is “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Musical favorites are Nat King Cole’s and Bing Crosby’s Christmas music. If I’m multi-tasking though and can’t be distracted listening to words, we like many things from Mannheim Steamroller and Narada.

I’m totally with Heidi on “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. It is just not Christmas without it. And of course, I mean the Chuck Jones version, *not* the one with Jim Carrey. [Imagine me sticking my finger down my throat here.] Another great fave is Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer from 1964. Who doesn’t love that island of misfit toys?
